The Talkeetna area is a wonderful place to discover the magic of the night sky and Aurora Borealis photography due to the abundance of easily accessible dark sky locations. Talkeetna is located 100 miles north of Anchorage in the Upper Susitna Valley and has an outstanding panoramic view of the Alaska Range that can be enjoyed and photographed from several places.
Our night sky workshops are designed for both amateur and professional photographers looking for an understanding of the equipment and technique necessary for capturing the night sky and the Aurora Borealis. Participants should have a grasp of their cameras' settings (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO).
The photography workshop will take place at Aurora Dora - gallery/studio, starting at 10 pm. There will be a short 30 minutes to 1-hour class at the studio where I will cover techniques for capturing night sky photos, from basic camera set up and settings to helpful websites and software to help you come away with great night sky photos. After that, we will be outside for 90 minutes (or longer, hopefully, if the Auroras are out) shooting the night sky.
During this workshop we will concentrate on the techniques necessary to capture low light and night sky photos. Hopefully, the weather cooperates, and we will have a chance to photograph the stars and the northern lights. Even in cloudy or snowy conditions, we will still conduct the workshop, and you will come away with everything you need to know about capturing great northern lights and night sky images.
Basic equipment needed: A DSLR or Mirrorless Camera (I recommend bringing extra batteries); A Wide Angle Lens, relatively fast (maximum aperture 3.5 but 2.8 or lower is the ideal); Sturdy Tripod; Cable Release and Headlamp (must include a red light).
It is best to assume the workshop nights will be cold, this is Alaska, so dress in warm layered clothing.
We will be shooting from a dark sky local location within a few minutes of walking or driving distance from the gallery/studio. The location will be determined upon weather conditions that evening.
The cost of the workshop is $250.00 per person. Class size is limited to 8 participants - spouses must register as a participant if interested in attending.
Registration and payment are necessary to reserve your space and is non-refundable. Be sure you can attend the workshop scheduled date, I do not reschedule attendees.
In the highly unlikely event for any reason, I need to cancel a workshop due to an unforeseen event or emergency, Aurora Dora ®/Dora Redman is not responsible for any reimbursement of travel-related expenses or registration fees. A new workshop will be scheduled, or you will have priority placement in a future workshop.
